Best Time to Travel

One of the most asked questions I get as a travel advisor is “When is the best time to travel?” And my answer is never the same.

Why is that? While I can always give general advice, the real answer is that it depends entirely on what works best for you and your travel companions. I can tell you that January might be a nice month to go somewhere, but if you are a teacher who can't take a week off work, then that advice doesn't do you any good. Or if your kids are in seasonal activities, telling you there are good prices in September doesn't help if you can't actually travel then due to other commitments.

If you want some general advice, I recommend avoiding travel during school holidays (which are basically all the federal holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc). When kids have time off, families tend to travel in order to avoid missing school instruction and that makes the overall crowd level and price higher.

However, if one of those holidays happens to be the best time for you to travel, then do it. As long as you have appropriate expectations, you can still have a great trip.

The truly best time to travel is whenever you can. In all honesty, most popular vacation destinations are busy year round, so don't focus too much on avoiding crowds. Do what works best for you and not what works best for anyone else! I have traveled somewhere every month of the year and have always been able to have a great trip!
